From the 1940's to the late 1980's, the iconic confectionary brand Lemon's Pure Sweets had its production factory situated in Drumcondra, just off Millmount Avenue where the 'College Manor' development stands today.
Lemon's Pure Sweets made the well known Lemon's Seasons Greetings, Lemon’s Fruit Gems, Lemon’s Rum & Butter Toffees, Lemon’s Liquorice Toffees, Lemon’s Irish Butter Toffees, Lemon’s Taste of Ireland Tins, Lemon’s Orchard Jellies and many more.
The entrance to the old factory site is currently a vacant space on Millmount Avenue.
To further develop our local community amenities and to pay homage to the Lemon's Sweet factory heritage, we propose developing a new community enriching space in the form of a pocket park in this vacant area. In addition, the 125th anniversary of the early building of homes on Millmount Avenue is coming up in 2023 and the Drumcondra Triangle Residents Association would like to help create a way for the Millmount area to celebrate its heritage through a unique marking of it with Lemon’s Square.
The pocket park proposal involves planters, a shed and seating around a central area. This would facilitate our community activities and provide an important green area for nature and relaxation. Going with the Lemon's Pure Sweets theme, we would paint the planters to represent the iconic Lemon's lines and incorporate logos and other imagery harking back to the factory.
